How to Score Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2 (With Examples)

Writing is the lowest-scoring module for most South Asian candidates, and Task 2 carries two-thirds of the writing marks. The jump from Band 6 to Band 7 is not about fancy vocabulary — it is about doing four specific things the examiner is trained to look for.

1. Answer every part of the question (Task Response)

Band 6 essays typically address the topic; Band 7 essays address the exact question. If the prompt asks 'To what extent do you agree?', you must state a clear position in the introduction and maintain it in every paragraph. If it asks for 'advantages AND disadvantages', covering only one side caps you at Band 5 for Task Response.

Fix: before writing, underline each task word in the prompt and check your plan covers all of them. Spend 5 of your 40 minutes planning — Band 7 writers plan; Band 6 writers start writing immediately.

2. One clear idea per paragraph (Coherence and Cohesion)

Examiners award Band 7 coherence when each body paragraph has one central topic, introduced by a clear topic sentence and developed with explanation and one example. Band 6 paragraphs often stack three underdeveloped ideas.

Fix: use the P-E-E-L structure — Point, Explain, Example, Link. Also cut mechanical linkers ('Firstly, Secondly, Moreover' in every sentence); overusing them actually lowers your cohesion score. Band 7 uses referencing ('this policy', 'such an approach') instead.

3. Less common vocabulary, used precisely (Lexical Resource)

Band 7 requires 'less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation'. That means natural academic phrases — 'a viable alternative', 'exacerbate the problem', 'a significant proportion of' — not memorised idioms shoehorned into an essay. One wrongly used 'impressive' word costs more than it gains.

Fix: build topic-specific word banks (education, environment, technology, health) and learn collocations, not isolated words. When you get an essay evaluated, note every vocabulary correction and reuse the corrected phrase in your next essay.

4. Complex sentences without errors (Grammatical Range and Accuracy)

The Band 7 descriptor says 'frequent error-free sentences'. Many candidates chase complexity and lose accuracy — a page of broken conditionals scores lower than clean mixed sentences. You need both range (relative clauses, conditionals, passives) and control.

Fix: master three structures you can produce perfectly under pressure, and get every practice essay checked. This is where AI evaluation changes the game — instant, criterion-by-criterion feedback on every essay means you fix the same error once, not fifty times.
