Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test gives you one minute to prepare and two minutes to talk about a topic you cannot predict. Candidates who memorise model answers freeze the moment the topic differs from what they prepared. The solution is a framework, not a script.
The 4-part framework: Set, Describe, Story, Feeling
Whatever the cue card asks — a person, place, object, or event — structure your two minutes the same way. Set the scene (when and where this happened, 20 seconds). Describe the subject with specific detail (40 seconds). Tell one short story or specific moment connected to it (40 seconds). Finish with how you feel about it now and why (20 seconds).
The story section is what separates Band 6 from Band 7 speakers. Specific past events force natural narrative tenses and personal vocabulary, and examiners hear immediately that you are not reciting a memorised answer.
Use your one minute of preparation properly
Don't write sentences — you'll read them and sound robotic. Write four anchor words, one for each framework part. For 'Describe a gift you received': 'birthday / blue bicycle / first ride crash / freedom'. Four words are enough to keep you on track for the full two minutes.
Practise this daily: pick a random cue card, prepare for exactly 60 seconds, record yourself for exactly 2 minutes, then listen back. Note where you hesitated and which words you repeated.
What examiners actually score
Fluency and Coherence (can you keep going without long pauses?), Lexical Resource (topic vocabulary and paraphrasing), Grammatical Range (tenses, especially past narrative), and Pronunciation (intelligibility and natural rhythm — not a British accent). Nowhere does the rubric reward memorised sophistication.
Self-assessing these four criteria is nearly impossible, which is why speaking improves fastest with feedback. An AI speaking partner lets you do a full Part 2 simulation any time and get band-scored feedback on all four criteria instantly — practise ten cue cards a week instead of one per coaching class.
